Sandy River Chinook Salmon - The Hook-Up

Sandy River Chinook Salmon - The Hook-Up

Salmon fishing on the Sandy River had been pretty hot early on with a few Coho Salmon caught, but for the last two weekends the rivers cleared and the bite cooled off.  Saturday morning (October 16th) was cold with the suggestion of frost on the car’s windshield as James and I set out into the freezing mist to see what lurked in the river that morning.

James set up shop at the top of the seam and started working his way down, and I started at the bottom and worked my way upstream.  Right off the bat, James noticed a big fish rising and swimming around below his spot, but the fish swam out of sight before he had a shot at it.  I worked my way up with a slight variation of my homemade custom spinner when something big slammed my spinner!

James with his Sandy River Coho Salmon

James with his Sandy River Coho Salmon

It’s official!  As of yesterday morning, James is on the board and back in the game, picking up his first salmon in a while!  And what a nice Sandy River Coho Salmon hen to make a comeback with, too!  Nice work, dude!  She was chock full of eggs and cut nice and pink.  This bright fish hit one of the top secret JkbWorld-design custom spinners that I rocked the Sandy River with for Coho Salmon last week!  I think it was his new waders!

On Day 5 (Thursday 7/29/2010), we awoke to hear the rushing water of Eagle Creek.  We packed up our gear and headed out for the remaining 7 1/2 miles from 7 1/2 mile campground toward our triumphant finish at the Eagle Creek trailhead.  About a half mile beyond the campsite, we encountered Seven Mile Falls.

Wahtum Lake at Junction of Pacific Crest Trail and Eagle Creek Trail

After a good night’s mosquito-free sleep, Day 4 (Wednesday 7/28/2010) started with us feeling good and refreshed.  We headed out of camp at about 7:30-8:00am.  We had a nice granola breakfast and broke camp along the Pacific Crest Trail toward the junction of the PCT and Eagle Creek trail.  (As you can see by the photo above, we made it!)
