JkbWorld Wireless http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#63

Hardly any of the glory of JkbWorld.com is now available using the web browser on your cell phone! Surf to this address through your cell phone's web browser: http://www.jkbworld.com/w/index.wml

(yeah, I know, it sucks, but really, who surfs the net on a cell phone, anyway?)

My Window Office http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#62

This is my new corner office with the big window! It's only a temporary office setup while my company looks for larger office space, so for now, I get a really nice view!

(Yeah, I know, cell phone photos suck...)

Flash Movie: Dan's World 2 http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#56

My brother, Ghosty Dan, has released a new animation, the second in his Dan's World series. This one is pretty good, too, so I hope you check it out!

It got pretty good reviews at Newgrounds, so if you can't stand popups, click the other link.

Here's the Movie!

Zeke's World revamped http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#54 Zekesworld, well a new name is in order but until then a new system is in place. I used a nice little package called slooze it works quite well. Its got a rating system and comments for pictures I've not enabled those yet and can either use a mysql database(i've not tried that yet) or stores information in .txt files. The pictures are indexed by child name and broken down into date ranges. Skinning will be the next project but this will suffice for now. locu Gabriel Alexander Born 8-26-2005 http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#53 The third edition to the Locu family was born on 8-26-2005. Gabriel Alexander weighed in at 9lbs 2oz and 20.75 inches long. All is well and mom and baby Gabe home. I've got a few pictures up and a total redesign of zekesworld is in the works as well. Locu G-Pong Resurrected http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#51 Once upon a time, when I was just a young upstart, I wrote a first version of the Pong game as a Java Applet. As I continued to learn Java, I made some improvements to the game, but it generally sucked. At some point, as a UNH Undergraduate, I took a Graphics class, where I added the G- prefix to make it G-Pong. I look back on the code now and think to myself, "Damn, I sucked back then". Anyway, the game is playable, and if you're up for some mindless entertainment, have a good time! Click the Link above! Jkb Linux is for Super Villains http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#50 A Flash movie about switching to Linux. Good weekend fun. Dakota Dan's World Animation http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#48 Ghosty Dan, is at it again, with his new animation "Dan's World I". I thought it was pretty funny, and definitely worth watching! Check it out! Tuxedo JkbWorld.com now Supports RSS! http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#47 Out of curiosity, I added a RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feed to JkbWorld News. When you look at the News section, you'll see a little icon looking like this:

This will allow people with news tickers to add JkbWorld and all of my thrilling news items to their news and be kept up-to-date! Even more fun is Firefox's Live Bookmarks. This allows you to bookmark my RSS feed, and it will then show you all of my headlines and their links in your Firefox toolbar. Personally, I expect at most four people to actually set up my RSS feed on their computers, and all four of you are using Firefox. I believe this Live Bookmark capability will also be available in Internet Explorer 7.

Okay, for the techies: click the RSS button above and you'll see the XML of my RSS feed in a new window. The XML code there was written to a file by my RSSWriter Java application. It reads my news database and prints the last 10 or so items to the file. I have it running via cron. Originally, I wanted it to be a PHP application and to generate on demand, but I admit, I bungled the PHP headers confusing myself long enough for me to write the Java application. No sooner had I gotten the Java RSSWriter working than I realized why my PHP prototype didn't work--(yeah, i printed an html-body set of tags before my XML ones.) --so I kept my Java one, since it was finished and working.

Anyway, to learn more about RSS, I recommend this link: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss
and also recommend downloading the RSS document from Slashdot.org to see how it all works. Have fun!

Chanter Tales are here at last!! http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#46 My brother, Dan, finally completed Chanter Tales and posted them on Newgrounds.com. From his website:

Chanter Tales earned 4th place against the other daily submissions on 6/16/05.

For a few months now, I've been working on the first installment of an animated series called 'Chanter Tales', starring 'Nuok' --a young chanter you may have seen in short stories that have been on this site in the past

Code128, UPC-A added to PHP PEAR Image_Barcode http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#45 I wanted to add UPC-A bar code printing capability to a program I was working on. I saw the PHP PEAR project had a great library called Image_Barcode. I decided to modify Image_Barcode's Ean-13 module to print UPC-A bar codes. Since it was a fun experience, I decided to rewrite my old Code-128 module from Comet (a Visual Basic Project) into PHP so I could add that, too. (By the way, Code128 and UPC-A are bar code formats) Here's the link if you'd like to download and use it.

PHP PEAR Image_Barcode

Updated (6/11/2005): I put my testing programs up so you can see how the Bar Codes look. If you have a bar code reader like my trusty CueCat, you can print them out and scan them, too!

UPS Rates Web Service Experiment http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#40 I have been experimenting with UPS' Web Services, particularly the UPS Rates and Services Selection application. For a few months now, I've been working on the first installment of an animated series called "Chanter Tales," starring "Nuok" --a young chanter you may have seen in short stories that have been on this site in the past.

Hopefully, the animated tales will get a better reaction than the literary ones. The first episode is nearing completion, but I don't yet feel comfortable posting a release date. I intend to post it on Newgrounds.com.

Here are some images from the series:

I've also added a link to get there from my Link box on my main page. Jkb Dominoes on a Chessboard http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#35 This was a Java program I wrote a while back to simulate a logic puzzle of placing dominoes on a chessboard. I posted the code and a quick little writeup about it. In the program, I attempted to use Apache Jakarta POI to print my attempts to Excel, so that code is kind of neat. I also made some fun transparent graphics using GIMP for the html page. It was entertaining for me, so maybe you'll enjoy it as well. Jkb Web Services: Apache Axis and Google Web API http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#34 I decided to post my story about using Google Web Services API with Apache Axis and discuss some of my findings. I've included some Java code examples, a few Ant scripts, and some Web Services XML. If you're interested in Web Services at all, you might find it interesting. Enjoy! Jkb Intrusion Detection Using Snort http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#30 These are PowerPoint slides from a presentation on Intrusion Detection Systems that Brian Zuk and I gave to fellow Computer Science students at the University of New Haven. In the presentation, we demonstrated how to write Snort rules, and analyze its reports. We utilized SAINT as our Intruder, scanning the network, while allowing Snort to Detect it. While hardly a step-by-step guide to Intrusion Detection, it does cover some Snort basics. I hope you enjoy it. Jkb and Brian Z. Jkb Tomcat Source Disclosure Workaround http://www.jkbworld.com/jkbnews.php#25 A Source Code Disclosure vulnerability is typically where a flaw in the system reveals the source code used by a program. On application servers, in particular my Tomcat on W2K, you could pass a URL of login.jsp as login.JSP. Since W2K is not case-sensitive, it will assume you want the login.jsp and point your browser there. Next, it will review the mappings of extensions to programs. The .jsp extension is mapped to the Tomcat, while .JSP isn't mapped. In Windows, you can't map the upper and lower-case names, so I told Apache to rewrite all .JSP requests as .jsp. This could also work with PHP, ASP, etc. Anyway, I posted my Apache RewriteEngine configuration to Nessus. Here it is!
