Nehalem Bay Fishing Trip

Jeff and Paula with Coho Salmon at Nehalem Bay

Paula’s dad, Clark, let us know that the Coho Salmon would be coming in to Nehalem Bay during September, so we checked out the tide tables and found a good time to camp out at Nehalem Bay State Park and do some salmon fishing! Paula and I packed up the tents and camping gear, while Clark brought his boat up, and we prepared to hit the bay! Click to read more and see more pictures!

Tuesday was an absolutely great day to be out fishing. The sun was out and the weather was beautiful. This was our first time fishing out on Nehalem Bay, and it was very scenic. The towns of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler were also nice little coastal towns.

Paula’s rod was the hot rod of the trip. Right out of the gate, she hooked up with a nice 25 pound chinook salmon on Tuesday, but we had to let it go, as the Nehalem was not open for chinook. Other than that one biter, and two other boats who managed hookups, it was more of a show from the jumping Coho salmon. At times, particularly close to the town of Wheeler, there were tons of salmon jumping all around the boat, often with 2 or 3 salmon being in midair at any one time!

We packed it up in the middle of the afternoon and headed back to the campsite, setting up the tents and then walked down to the beach to have a look around.

Wednesday morning started off overcast and foggy. We thought that it would burn off in a little while. But boy were we mistaken. Instead, it rained like hell, drenching everyone! Paula got her rain pants and raincoat on early in preparation, with Clark and I determined to wait it out. Eventually, after trolling around for a while in the rain, we stopped by the docks to stretch out, and we picked up the rest of our rain gear…

…and then it was ON! Paula hooked up with the first fish, a bright Coho buck on a spinner! It cartwheeled a few times, showing everyone that it was a Coho! She brought the fish in and I netted it.

About 10 minutes later, Paula’s rod bent over again, this time, I got the fish, this one fighting pretty well. This fish, cut in, tangling up one of the other lines that we needed to cut to get the fish in, but it all ended pretty well. This fish was a little darker, but also a bit fatter. Certainly a Nehalem Bay Pig!

Anyway, we had a great time fishing in Nehalem Bay, and will be ready to return sometime in the future!
